The Garden Cinema | Covent Garden

Complete fit-out of additional 3rd Screen, Atrium Bar, Lounge Area, Re-furbishment of Box Office & Basement Car Park

Building on our long-standing relationship with The Garden Cinema, having delivered the acoustic treatments to the original basement Screens 1 and 2 in 2017, we were delighted to be appointed to complete the full fit out of their new third screen at ground floor level.

We worked closely with the Client’s highly experienced cinema consultant, Andrew Robertshaw of ARC Cinema Solutions, to develop the most effective acoustic “box within a box” possible while maximising internal screen ceiling heights. This trade off was particularly critical given the sensitive film studio spaces located above and the operational basement cinema auditoria below.

The building itself has been carefully refurbished by its owner over many years. A key architectural feature is the central atrium, which has been structurally opened through the heart of the building to bring natural light down to the ground floor via rooflights at top floor level, creating a striking focal point within the Atrium area.

Our initial scope of works was limited to the construction of Screen 3. However, through the commitment and capability of our site and management team, the Client expanded our role to include the Atrium Bar and Lounge, a structural knock-through and refurbishment of the existing Box Office and associated structural works within the basement car park.

The project presented significant structural challenges due to the complexity of the existing building fabric. We worked closely with the Client’s structural engineers to develop economical and practical solutions for slab strengthening and to design suitable structural and acoustic ceiling suspension methods within the existing pot-and-beam construction.

We took over the ground floor works during the final stages of the London Film School fit-out on the upper levels, while the basement cinemas and adjacent ground floor offices remained fully operational. This required careful coordination, strict noise control, and meticulous planning to ensure minimal disruption to ongoing building operations.

The Atrium Bar evolved throughout the project, led by CineCentre Design and developed in close collaboration with Michael Chambers to realise a distinctive and characterful space. Prior to final finishes, the entire atrium ceiling was acoustically suspended and fire-boarded to achieve the required levels of fire protection and acoustic separation.

We would like to thank The Garden Cinema for the opportunity to be part of this beautiful project and to play a key role in bringing the next phase of the Garden Cinema to life.

“Ben and the team at Sound Solutions were extremely attentive and sensitive to our needs, working tirelessly to find and offer solutions.

They delivered on their promises and hit all their deadlines - even with all of our last-minute changes.

Ben and the team were a great pleasure to work with and we couldn't recommend them highly enough”
